—  Care for people and the land

Promoting relationships with neighboring communities and generating positive social and environmental impacts are part of Klabin’s social and environmental performance objectives. This involves focusing on assessing and mitigating actual and potential impacts related to the company’s operations, engaging stakeholders to identify expectations and needs, initiatives for dialogue and local empowerment, as well as social and environmental development projects.

The following documents include the basis for the management of these issues:

Through the Private Social Investment Platform, the company directs its investments to four lines of action – education, local development, environmental education and cultural development – and two major axes: land and people.

In order to strengthen its commitment to sustainable development, Klabin also voluntarily endorses a number of external initiatives and commitments in this area (see Voluntary Commitments Undertaken).

 


—  Continuous engagement

In addition to internal training aimed at developing the relationship with the community, attended by 28 employees in 2018, Klabin continuously promotes the engagement of members of the communities surrounding its operations in Paraná through several initiatives:

—  Boosting the social and economic dynamics

(GRI 203-2)

In the stakeholder mapping study conducted in 2018 (see Stakeholder consultation and engagement), the degree of economic dependence was one of the key criteria for analyzing stakeholder groups during the process. This is due to the fact that the greater the economic dependence on the relationship between the company and the stakeholder, the greater impacts may be – either positive or negative. Therefore, needs must be identified and addressed. See the table below for the main indirect economic impacts caused by Klabin’s activities in society.

However, there may be changes after a detailed study considering the economic impact and mitigation measures.

In addition to managing potential and actual operational risks and impacts, Klabin seeks to maximize positive impacts of its activities in the area and boost economic and social development. For example, the 13 municipalities within the area of direct and indirect influence from the Puma Unit, in Paraná, receive support from Klabin for the development of their Multi-Year Plans (PPAs). Twelve cities in the area, responsible for supplying wood to the Monte Alegre and Puma Units, have received guidance on Local Development Guidelines.

Initiatives such as the Beekeeping & Meliponiculture and the Matas Sociais [Social Forests] Program also contribute to increasing income and production diversification. Another example is the implementation of the Local Development Forum in Goiana, Pernambuco, and Angatuba, São Paulo. The starting point was a diagnosis obtained with the application of the Social Progress Index (SPI), an innovative methodology developed by researchers at Harvard University. The program adopts the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as guiding principles for an agenda of local progress and prosperity.

—  KLABIN SUPPORT FOR LOCAL DEVELOPMENT

Klabin believes that economic, social and cultural empowerment of communities is a path for the development of the regions in which it operates. Thus, its social investment initiatives strengthen the skills, knowledge and the potential of each area. The Community Development Forums, the Matas Legais and Matas Sociais programs deserve mention, as well as the Beekeeping & Meliponiculture project.

Community Forums

The Local Development Forum, established in Goiana (PE), gained prominence in a relevant international discussion environment. It was one of the 19 projects selected by the Global Compact’s Rede Brasil to integrate the “SDGs in Brazil”, which recognized initiatives related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) promoted by the private sector in Brazil. The event was part of the 73rd UN General Assembly in New York (September 2018).

The first Development Forums promoted by Klabin took place in 2015, in the municipalities of Correia Pinto and Otacílio Costa. In 2017, the municipality of Goiana was included in the project. Since then, the initiative has been improved with the application of the Social Progress Index (SPI). The methodology measures items related to the region’s quality of life, regardless of economic development, thus more effectively identifying the actual situation of the city and pointing out the priorities to be addressed in the Forum. The proposal presented by the Forum includes various players from the organized civil society and advocates for the joint creation of a new management model based on the discussion of solutions to local issues. In these meetings, rather than playing the main role, the company acts as one of the players just like the others, seeking answers to contribute to local sustainable development. Also in 2018, Klabin engaged in mobilizing the community of Angatuba (SP), where it has a manufacturing unit, for the establishment of one more Forum.

Solid Waste Program

Klabin’s Solid Waste Program, which was jointly developed with the Inter-municipal Consortium Caminhos do Tibagi, promotes actions to support selective waste collection in seven municipalities in the Campos Gerais region, in the state of Paraná:  Imbaú, Ortigueira, Reserva, Tamarana, Tibagi, Telêmaco Borba and Ventania. Klabin provides municipalities with structures and equipment, such as sheds, pick-up trucks and materials, to organize the recycling activities in each location, as well as to promote the training of waste pickers and the establishment of associations or cooperatives. Another front of the project is environmental education in municipal schools aiming at the training of teachers and pedagogical coordinators, promoting concepts such as selective collection and recycling.

In 2018, the actions focused mainly on environmental education. During the year, 65 schools and 282 educators, including teachers and pedagogical coordinators, underwent training with specialists and became qualified to multiply concepts such as “recycling” and “solid waste” among students. Educators were given the challenge of developing specific work with their students, which was displayed in environmental exhibitions at the schools, disseminating the topic among the community.

Matas Legais

Developed in partnership with the Environment and Life Preservation Association (Apremavi), the Matas Legais Program consists of actions related to rural property planning, conservation, environmental education and forest development in the states of Paraná and Santa Catarina. Small and medium-sized lot owners are instructed to act in a more efficient, profitable and environmentally-friendly manner. Producers participate in courses, exchange visits and receive free seedlings of native plants. The program also encourages forestry actions using planted forests of pine and eucalyptus, the enrichment of secondary forests, the recovery of riparian forests, supporting the conservation of water sources, organic agriculture and eco-tourism.

Matas Sociais [Social Forests] – Planning Sustainable Properties

The program aims to assist family farmers from Ortigueira, Telêmaco Borba, Imbaú and Reserva (Paraná) with the Rural Environmental Registration (CAR) in the Environmental Recovery Plan (PRA), sustainable planning, and diversified use of the property. Thus, it encourages family farming, staying in the field, development of the local production and consumption chain, as well as entrepreneurship. It is developed in partnership with the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (Sebrae), The Nature Conservancy (TNC), and Apremavi.

The products produced by these family farming properties are sold to the local market and Klabin’s restaurant, as well as used for animal feed in the Klabin Ecological Park. Recently, the program has also been reinforcing local milk production, with a higher concentration of producing properties in the municipality of Ortigueira. Over 330 rural producers are assisted by the program through training actions that involve agriculture and livestock management, organic production and environmental education, among others. In 2018, Matas Sociais was the winner of the 25th Expressão de Ecologia Award, the most renowned environmental award in Southern Brazil.

Beekeeping and Meliponiculture Program

Since 2005, Klabin lends its forests to small and medium rural producers for bee husbandry. In addition to strengthening family income, the program benefits the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystems since bees pollinate local plant species, while improving the productivity of other crops.

In 2018, the program reached a record production of 11,650 tons of honey from producers in Ortigueira, Curiúva, Reserva, Ventania, Arapoti and Telêmaco Borba, in the state of Paraná. Since it was established, 168 tons of honey have been produced and sold.  The initiative is developed in partnership with the Association of Beekeepers of Telêmaco Borba and the Caminhos do Tibagi Cooperative.  In 2018, the program was extended to the municipalities of Otacílio Costa (SC) and Angatuba (SP).

Support to public administration

Based on the belief that efficient planning and good governance are key to boosting local development and in line with its sustainability policy, Klabin supported the municipalities of Imbaú, Telêmaco Borba and Ortigueira, in Paraná, in the development of their Multi-Year Plans (PPA) for the 2018-2021 period.

In 2019, the company’s actions are focused on monitoring the execution of the plans, through the training of the city’s management teams. Pursuant to article 165 of the Brazilian Constitution, the PPA is a medium-term plan establishing guidelines, objectives and targets to be followed by Federal, State or Municipal governments over a four-year period.

Regional Development Guidelines

In 2018, the Klabin Regional Development Support Program was created in the state of Paraná, comprising 27 priority guidelines in 12 municipalities that had organized themselves to receive an increased ICMS (tax on sales and services) collection from the Puma Unit. They are: Cândido de Abreu, Congonhinhas, Curiúva, Imbaú, Ortigueira, Reserva, Rio Branco do Ivaí, São Jerônimo da Serra, Sapopema, Telêmaco Borba, Tibagi and Ventania.  The guidelines lead the actions of the municipalities in the following axes: education, family farming, logistics and public safety.

—  KLABIN EDUCATION

Klabin’s actions in Education include initiatives to improve education, sports and citizenship. The projects focus on training teachers and students of all educational levels (early childhood, elementary, secondary, technical and after school activities), and improving school infrastructure. Semeando Educação, Crescer Lendo and the actions carried out by the Terra Viva Association are examples of projects that encourage a volunteering attitude among Klabin employees. In 2019, the company, together with the Government of the State of Paraná and the Municipality of Ortigueira, announced the creation of Ortigueira’s State Center for Professional and Agricultural Education to train and empower the local workforce to work in forestry operations.

Crescer Lendo [Grow Up Reading] Project

In partnership with United Way Brasil and the Avisa Lá Institute, the initiative promotes training to early childhood development professionals and the establishment of children’s libraries in municipal schools. Since 2014, when it first started, actions have been promoted within the scope of the project in 26 municipalities in seven states where Klabin operates. Over 10,000 children have benefited from the initiative thus far, some 18,000 books have been donated and more than 630 professionals have been trained.

Klabin Semeando Educação [Klabin Sowing Education] Project

This project offers consulting services to principals, educators and teachers of public schools by sharing methods, best practices and tools to improve school management indicators, including leadership training and expanding the participation of the school community. Created in 2017, the program encompassed 31 state public schools in the municipalities of Telêmaco Borba, Ortigueira and Imbaú, in Paraná, which registered an average evolution of 23% in the Brazilian Basic Education Development Index (IDEB) after its implementation. Activities were resumed in 2019, with a focus on the municipal education network. Altogether, about 11,000 students and teachers will be benefited, from 65 schools in the urban and rural areas of the same municipalities. The project will be developed in partnership with the Municipal Education Departments.

Terra Viva

Klabin’s Terra Viva Volunteer Association is a non-profit organization established in 2003. Since then, it organizes and promotes citizenship and solidarity actions with the support of employees and their families. The projects can include specific actions, such as collecting clothes, food, milk, blood donation, and other special occasion activities; or educational, such as helping people find their first job; and offering creative technical classes such as guitar, language, or computer courses, among others. The target audiences served range from children and young people living under social risk or bearing physical disabilities to the elderly.

Support for training on forestry operations

In 2019, Klabin announced a partnership with the State Government of Paraná and the Local Government of Ortigueira to establish the State Center for Professional Education on Forestry and Agribusiness – the first technical school for the training of forestry operators and heavy machinery mechanics in Brazil. The project is being implemented on the premises previously intended to house workers for the Puma Project during the construction of the factory – the site was conceived with the future use by the community in mind.

The adaptation work will be carried out by the Paraná State Education Department and include, in addition to the remodeling of the facilities, the construction of a mechanic’s workshop and a covered multi-sport court. Klabin used its technical expertise to assist in the construction of the course curricula. To this end, along with project partners, a team designated by the company visited benchmark schools in Finland and Sweden, in Scandinavia – a globally renowned region for its paper and pulp industry.

Klabin’s instructors who are currently responsible for training the company’s qualified workforce will participate in the teacher recruitment process for the future school and support the initial activities. In addition, the company is in contact with the world’s major manufacturers of forestry equipment and other companies in the sector to foster partnerships for equipping the laboratories.

The new education institution, which is due to open in 2020, will accommodate 800 students and will initially offer three courses: Forestry Operations Technician, Heavy Machinery Maintenance Technician and Agribusiness Technician, in the Complete (concurrent with high school) and Follow-up (for students who have completed high school and will only participate in the technical training) categories. About 300 seats will be offered for the boarding school and semi-boarding school modalities, allowing the admission of students from different regions of the country.

—  KLABIN AND THE ENVIRONMENT

With regard to Environmental Education, Klabin maintains projects for teachers and students of the communities to spread ecological awareness, support respect for the environment and conserve biodiversity.

Programa Caiubi [Caiubi Program]

The program trains teachers from cities in Paraná and Santa Catarina, with the support of local governments, institutions and professional partners to disseminate eco-friendly concepts and help educate responsible citizens. In 2018, the methodology was replicated and extended to municipalities participating in the Klabin Solid Waste Program  in Paraná, promoting the training of more than 280 education professionals. In total, among the schools in Paraná and Santa Catarina, the Program benefited more than 14,000 students in the period. Since 2001, when it first started, 245,000 students, 770 schools and about 9,000 teachers have already been assisted.

Protetores Ambientais [Environmental Protectors]

Theoretical and practical training for elementary school students on nature conservation, environmental legislation, aspects of local fauna and flora, first aid, civic duties, morals and ethics to help create cascading effects in environmental education. Run by the Environmental Police of Santa Catarina, it has been supported by Klabin since 2005. Since then, it has benefited over 300 teenagers between 11 and 14 years of age.

Força Verde Mirim

This program is intended for 4th and 5th grade students in municipal schools in Paraná, aiming to promote environmental education and raise awareness about the environment and the importance of preserving natural resources through theoretical and hands-on activities.  The project is carried out in partnership with the State Environmental Military Police and the local Departments of Education. In 2018, it focused exclusively on the rural area of Caeté, in the municipality of Ortigueira.

 

Projeto Crescer [Growing Up Project]

Continuous training of direct and indirect employees on environmental issues, health, family management, quality of life and professional growth, among other topics. In Paraná, four topics engaged 4,609 direct  and outsourced employees in the program’s activities in 2018.

Ecological Park

Created in the 1980s and located at Fazenda Monte Alegre (PR), Klabin’s Ecological Park spans an area of 11,000 hectares, 71% of which are natural forests. The activities performed at the site are intended for biodiversity conservation, wildlife rehabilitation, endangered species preservation, development of scientific research, and support for environmental education projects. Leisure and recreational activities are prohibited.

—  KLABIN CULTURAL

Klabin’s initiatives that support cultural development through artistic expression include the activities carried out at the Vera Lafer Cultural Center, such as Meninas Cantoras, Klabin Passo Certo and Nossa Língua Digital, as well as projects developed by the Ema and Eva Klabin Foundations.

Meninas Cantoras da Klabin [Klabin’s Girls Chorus]

Established in 2004 at the Monte Alegre Unit and expanded to the Puma Unit in 2017, both of which are in Paraná, Meninas Cantoras da Klabin is a group of daughters of Klabin employees and girls as young as 7 years of age from the communities of Telêmaco Borba and Ortigueira. It promotes choral singing and teaches music theory concepts, rhythm and vocal technique. Until December 2018, 1,152 children participated in the program at the Monte Alegre Unit, and 213 at the Puma Unit.

Passo Certo [Right Step]

Established in August 2008 at the Monte Alegre Unit in partnership with Studio 3 Cia. de Dança, the program expanded to the Puma Unit in 2017 and consists of activities such as contemporary dance and capoeira for kids and teenagers, children of employees and youth of at least 6 years of age in the communities of Telêmaco Borba and Ortigueira. Its goal is to develop body language through art and promote the participants’ quality of life.  Until December 2018, 1,198 children and 269 employees had participated in the program at the Monte Alegre Unit and 225 at the Puma Unit.

Nossa Língua Digital [Our Digital Language]

In partnership with the Jaborandi Institute, the program seeks to improve the oral and written communication skills of young people between the ages of 13 and 18, children of employees and residents of the community of Telêmaco Borba (Paraná). It uses new information and communication technologies to address topics such as identity, sexuality, the environment, citizenship, drugs, among other issues. Since 2009, the program has trained 1,110 students at the Espaço Cultural Vera Lafer.  The program is also being developed with public school 5th graders, associating the topics addressed in the project with the annual class curriculum. The program has been underway in Telêmaco Borba since 2010, having trained 1,740 students, and in Ortigueira since 2017, with the participation of 471 students.

Programa Decolar [Take-off Program]

The initiative, carried out by Klabin since 2013, has the support of the Municipal Department of Education of Telêmaco Borba and the Brazilian Army, seeking to spread the culture of safety in the neighborhoods around the Monte Alegre Airport. Students from the 2nd to the 5th grades in public schools, between 7 and 10 years of age, are taught to spread safety information received in the classroom, to raise awareness of family members, neighbors, visitors, and other people in the community by encouraging proper behavior, avoiding crossing the airport area for any reason, while preserving and respecting airport assets. In 2018, 804 students participated in the program.

—  Klabin in the community

As a way of developing a closer relationship with the community and expanding the knowledge about the company and its products, Klabin promoted traveling fairs in several municipalities. “Klabin in the Community” is held in public places and welcomes the population to learn about the company’s production process and some of its social and environmental projects. In 2018, 16 events were held in 10 municipalities in Paraná, reaching 7,600 people. A magazine was also distributed in all residences of Telêmaco Borba, Ortigueira and Imbaú addressing Klabin’s sustainability initiatives in these cities and region for about 113,000 people.

 

—  Impact management

Managing the impacts of Klabin’s operations includes mapping, matrix development, and specific control and mitigation initiatives. Measures to reduce dust from truck traffic during harvesting activities, for example, comprise wetting the roads, investing in roads, planning routes, as well as procedures that limit the hours of operation.

In 2018, in Paraná, Klabin started testing trucks with built-in water tanks to wet roads while transporting the wood. The company has been examining alternatives to the use of water based on materials resulting from the production process, in order to reduce the use of the resource. In addition, the company has been seeking solutions to reduce dust, with products that provide for greater aggregation of the soil. The company also promotes awareness campaigns with the drivers, contributing to the mitigation of impacts.

Measures to reduce noise and traffic of heavy vehicles also involve the new Pulp and Paper Logistics Unit of Paranaguá (Paraná), through which Puma Unit pulp, as well as other products, are being processed for export. In industrial operations, impacts are reassessed whenever there is a significant change in the company’s processes, such as the expansion of production capacity or the installation of new equipment.

The management of impacts on the company has been improved in recent years with diagnostic inputs made for the implementation of the Local Development Forums and the mapping and engagement of stakeholders, which also take into account the evaluation of impacts on human rights, and also the mapping of stakeholders in the communities. The management of the Human Rights assessment at Klabin is mainly supported by the following internal policies and documents:

  • Code of Conduct,
  • Diversity Policy,
  • Policy for Fundamental Rights in Labor Relations,
  • Policy for Diversity and Promoting Employability,
  • Stakeholder Engagement Policy,
  • Reputational Capital Policy.

The Policies for Fundamental Rights in Labor Relations and for Diversity and Promoting Employability encompass the guidelines established by the Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights developed and approved by the UN Human Rights Council.

The routines required for certifications, such as OHSAS 18001, also protect rights regarding human dignity. The company’s internal procedures still govern situations of possible conflict resolution with local and traditional communities.

In 2018, 33% of Klabin’s operations were subjected to impact assessments or human rights analyses. In addition to the Social Progress Index (SPI), applied in the diagnosis of the Development Forum of Goiana (PE), which contains elements of human rights impact assessment, Klabin is studying the methodologies that best meet the reality of the business so that the human rights assessment process is formally established, covering all the company’s units.

The company’s commitment to this aspect is also reinforced by external initiatives that Klabin supports or is a signatory to (see Voluntary commitments undertaken for more information). The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, for example, has served as a basis for Klabin to outline goals and strategies for actions related to the issue.

Traditional communities

The company maps all traditional communities in its area of influence, such as quilombolas, faxinalenses (Paraná communities that inhabit small areas and live off of their relationship with the forest), and indigenous groups. In its relationship with these communities, the company follows the Brazilian legislation and the recommendations of ILO 169, resolution of the International Labor Organization on Indigenous and Tribal Peoples, ensuring their right to free, prior, informed consent (FPIC).

In 2012, it conducted a survey of indigenous baselines and analysis of the dynamics present in the Indigenous Lands of Tybagi-Mococa and Queimadas, of the Kaingang people, located in Paraná. The study serves as a basis for the monitoring of these populations through the Plano Básico Ambiental Indígena [Indigenous Basic Environmental Plan], with regular assessments . There were no cases of violation of the rights of indigenous peoples or traditional communities in the reporting period.
